Seiko’s Latest Speedtimer Release Takes Inspiration from the 1970s
Seiko has always been known for its diverse collection of watches, from traditional to funky designs. While their dive watches have gained popularity, their chronographs have yet to become ubiquitous. However, Seiko has produced some exceptional chronograph designs over the years, and their latest release draws inspiration from a classic model from the 1970s.
The SRQ047: A Traditional Yet Stylish Chronograph
The SRQ047 is a three-register chronograph with a classic “panda” dial execution. The main dial is a gentle cream color with a subtle vertical brushing, while the blue-gray subdials feature raised outer rings, adding depth to the overall dial design. The orange-tipped chronograph second hand and panda layout pay homage to the vintage Speedtimer from 1972.
With a 42mm stainless steel case measuring 14.6mm thick, the SRQ047 stays true to the original 1972 Speedtimer’s case lines and unusual bracelet design. It is powered by the 8R48 automatic chronograph movement, which features both a column wheel and vertical clutch. The watch has a power reserve of 45 hours and a minutes-hours-running seconds configuration at the 9, 6, and 3 positions. A discreet date window can also be found at 4:30.
Limited Edition SRQ049: A Darker and More Aggressive Variation
Alongside the standard SRQ047, Seiko is also releasing a limited edition version, the SRQ049. This watch shares the same specifications as the regular production version but features a blue-gray main dial and silver subdials. With its darker and slightly more aggressive character, the SRQ049 offers a distinct variation. Limited to 1,000 pieces, it is part of Seiko’s 100 year anniversary celebration.
Pricing and Availability
The retail price for the non-limited SRQ047 is $2,500, while the limited edition SRQ049, which includes an additional leather strap, is priced at $2,700. Both watches are expected to be available in December.
