Introducing the New 24MAS Divers
Seiko is back at it with the latest generation of their 1965 Diver’s Modern Re-Interpretation line, now dubbed the “24MAS.” This trio includes the SPB451 (blue), SPB453 (black), and the special edition SPB455 (charcoal grey with gold accents). Seiko has refined the proportions, improved the specs, and even introduced a new movement. These updates aim to enhance what was already a beloved model in Seiko’s lineup.
Refined Design and Enhanced Specs
The new models have been slightly slimmed down, with dimensions measuring 40mm wide, 13mm thick, and 46.4mm lug to lug. Despite these reductions, the water resistance has been bumped up from 200 meters to 300 meters, thanks to a redesigned caseback. This makes the new divers not only more wearable but also more capable.
Date Window Shift
One of the more controversial changes is the relocation of the date window from the traditional 3 o’clock position to 4:30. This decision allows for a full luminous marker at 3 o’clock, improving legibility and adhering better to ISO dive watch standards. While opinions on this change may vary, the execution is clean and unobtrusive.
Movement Upgrade
The new divers are powered by the Seiko 6R55 movement, offering a 72-hour power reserve. This movement is an upgrade from the 6R35 found in previous models, providing a slight boost in performance and reliability.
Bracelet and Strap Options
The bracelet design has been tweaked for better comfort, featuring shorter links and a smaller clasp. The special edition SPB455 also includes a grey textile strap made from recycled plastic, inspired by traditional Japanese weaving techniques. This strap is four times stronger than Seiko’s previous offerings.
Price and Availability
The SPB451 and SPB453 are priced at $1,300, while the SPB455 special edition comes in at $1,400. These models will be available at select Seiko retail locations starting in June 2024.
